FAQ

FAQ

What is Fido? Fido is an Electronic Book or E-Book Reader. It allows you to read books on your computer. It combines animation, sound and texture to present E-Books in a manner that emulates reading actual books. Once you have downloaded Fido on your computer, you will be able to read a novel on your monitor.

Does Fido cost anything? No. Fido is absolutely free.

What are the system requirements for Fido? The recommended requirements are a Pentium II 300 or greater, 64 MB of RAM and a video card with 8 MB or greater of video memory. However, Fido has been tested on computers with only 100 MHz processors, 48 MB of RAM and 2 MB of Video memory and worked perfectly.

Can I use Fido on my Macintosh? Not at this time. But check back In the New Stuff section for an update on the development of a Mac Fido. But if there is Mac Developer out there that wants to try, write us and we will advise.

Will books cost anything? Some will. Some won't. Dog Eared Press will always provide a generous selection of public domain books for free. Among these will be timeless classics that have been treasured for ages. All new books will have a small price, but rest assured that it will be far below what you are accustomed to paying for books.

Can Fido read books that are in PDF, HTML, etc.? At this time, Fido cannot digest PDF. But he can handle any book that is in HTML format. However, some formatting may vary slightly.

Can I convert any documents so that I can read them on Fido? Sure. Look in the New Stuff section in the near future for instructions on how to convert any document so that Fido can be used.

I've written something, will you publish it? Our editorial board will look at all submissions. We will then contact you with either an offer or suggestion for alternative methods of publication.

Do you charge authors to post their work? Absolutely not. The core philosophy of Dog Eared Press is to return money to where it belongs; the authors and their readers. If your work is selected for publication, there will never be any charge.

Fido? Are you serious? We try to never be too serious. Fido seemed like a name that showed our affection for our product. Fido is more to us than just some lines of code wrapped in a fancy package. He's a part of our family. But we do want suggestions for a new name! Write us at dep@dogearedpress.com.

Can I make a suggestion on adding features?
Of course you can! Fido is an ever evolving animal and we are counting on other book lovers to tell us how to make him better. Just send your suggestions to
DEP Mail.

Can I create enhancements to Fido?
Absolutely. We encourage developers to play with Fido and teach him new tricks. Just let us know what you have come up with so we can acknowledge your creativity.

Can I create my own Jackets?
Sure you can. Look for simple directions on creating Jackets in the New Stuff section in the near future.

Can I read these books on my PDA?
Not yet. But look for more in this developing area in the future. We won't forget our wireless friends.

Can I suggest a book for publication?
Of course. It must be a public domain book at this point. If you know an author interested in publishing with Dog Eared Press, please refer them to our Submissions section.

I have a Netscape Browser, do I have to have Internet Explorer to use Fido?
At this time Fido requires MS Internet Explorer 5.0 to operate. You can download MS Internet Explorer at the
Microsoft web site.
